StaffEng
What staff-plus engineering actually is.
About
Will Larson started StaffEng to make sense of a job title that most companies still can't define clearly: staff engineer. The site collects real staff-plus job descriptions, promotion packets, and interviews with engineers who've actually done the job, cutting through the vague "senior, but more" language most career ladders use.
It's less a newsletter in the traditional sense and more a running research project — new interviews and postings get added as they come in, and the tone stays practical rather than aspirational. If you're trying to figure out what staff engineers actually do day to day, or how to write a promotion case for one, this is closer to primary source material than career advice.
